Laboratory Medical Technician

Overall Purpose of the Position: 

To provide first class clinical tuberculosis laboratory services by performing technical procedures within the scope of activities provided by TASK Laboratory for clinical drug trials. This position requires a highly focused, independent, and self-motivated individual who takes pride in their quality of work.

 

Key Performance Areas (KPAs) & Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Performing testing / processing of samples according to training procedures and following the current version of the relevant Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
  • Performing clinical testing procedures, reviewing and verifying results and interacting with laboratory supervisors on technical matters to maintain effective management of the data required for the efficient functioning and smooth running of the laboratory to meet clinical requirements.
  • Ensuring that quality services are provided to clinical trial sponsors by monitoring work and processing samples by adhering to schedules to obtain maximized outcomes.
  • Implementing sound housekeeping procedures and working effectively with others as a member of a team to ensure a safe working environment in accordance with the Health and Safety regulations of the OHS Act
  • Participating in Quality Management System improvements to maintain the laboratory’s ISO15189 accreditation (IQC and EQC)
  • Capturing clinical trial participant information in the laboratory database to ensure that accurate and reliable data is generated for each clinical trial study
  • Operating, maintaining, and calibrating the equipment used in the laboratory to ensure that it is operating efficiently and providing accurate results. This includes recording instrument maintenance and quality control results as well as recognising and resolving problems by troubleshooting mal-functioning equipment and taking corrective action
  • Assisting the laboratory supervisor with overseeing and monitoring all results generated, IQC and EQC practices, equipment maintenance and asset management to ensure the most effective utilisation of resources, optimisation of stock levels and reduction of costs always.
  • Adhering to professional conduct requirements in line with organisational policy and relevant professional body ethical standard

 

Ideal Requirements

  • Relevant education and training as a Laboratory Medical Technician (Med Tech.), Laboratory Biotechnician (B.Tech) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (B.Sc. Hons)
  • At least 1-2 years’ experience working in an accredited TB laboratory, infectious diseases laboratory or similar environment
  • Experience working in a Biosafety Level 3/2 Laboratory is preferred
  • Candidates with experience in the following laboratory techniques will be given preference:
  • Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) testing
  • Sample processing
  • Acid fast bacilli (AFB) microscopy (Auramine O & Ziehl-Neelsen)
  • HAIN Line probe assays
  • GeneXpert® MTB/RIF assay
  • Liquid mycobacteria growth indicator tube (MGIT) culture.
  • Colony forming unit (CFU) culture
  • Mycobacterial 7H11S culture
  • MGIT drug susceptibility testing
