Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It most commonly affects the lungs (pulmonary TB), causing symptoms like a persistent cough, chest pain and shortness of breath, though it can also affect other organs such as the kidneys, spine or brain. Developing new treatments is critical because some TB strains resist the standard antibiotics and become what’s called multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB)—making the disease harder to treat, longer to cure and more dangerous for individuals and communities.
